Post-partum - Getting back to your strong or even stronger SELF
The time after your baby arrives is a critical time to protect, repair, and strengthen your abdominal and pelvic floor muscles. These muscles and proper breathing are critical for restoring abdominal and trunk muscle length and function.
Having a baby and taking care of a newborn is hard work. It may take a while to regain strength after the strain of pregnancy and birth and it is important that allow your body to properly recover and gradually strengthen.
Post-natal exercises can bring a host of positive energy to your body. Fitness not only helps you heal but also provides an outlet to recenter and focus on yourself - something that may feel a bit out of reach now when you are caring for another tiny human.
When to start?
Every woman will have their own individual needs and will recover in their own time.
You may start soon as you get clearance from your doctor or pelvic floor physiotherapist. Time frame for returning to exercise may vary based on the type of delivery you had as well as the degree of tearing, tissue healing, diastasis recti and other factors. Remember, every mamma is different.
Your pelvic floor and core, after being stretched for 9 months will take some time to return to near its usual position. A guided supervised strength program will help you to rebuild you core, back and surrounding muscles as well as restore your pelvic floor.
In the earlier post-natal stages, gentle regular activity may be beneficial both physically and psychologically.
With proper guidance, post-natal exercises can progress to include more advanced core and dynamic strengthening with the goal of returning to your strong or maybe even stronger self.
